What an energy-saving room heater really costs in Canada

The one calculation that matters

Cost per hour = power in kilowatts × your electricity rate per kWh. A small plug-in ceramic heater drawing around 1 kW at full output costs roughly your per-kWh rate every hour it is actively heating. Because the thermostat cuts the element once the room is warm, real-world use is usually well under that — often half.

Your rate is on your latest hydro bill, expressed in cents per kilowatt hour. Multiply, and you have your number. Don't trust any heater advertised as costing "pennies a day" without showing you that arithmetic.

Rates vary a lot by province

• Quebec: among the lowest residential rates in Canada.
• British Columbia: low, tiered residential rates.
• Manitoba: low hydro rates.
• Ontario: time-of-use rates — running off-peak costs noticeably less.
• Alberta: variable rates that move with the market.
• Nova Scotia & PEI: among the highest rates, so zone heating helps most.

In Ontario in particular, running a room heater during off-peak evening and overnight hours costs substantially less than the same hours on peak.

Where the saving actually comes from

Zone heating. If you turn the central thermostat down two or three degrees and heat only the room you are sitting in, you stop paying to warm empty bedrooms, hallways and storage space. For a household that spends most of the evening in one or two rooms, that trade is usually favourable. For a household with people spread through the whole house all day, it usually is not.

Five ways to cut the cost further

• Use the thermostat rather than running the heater flat out — set it and leave it.
• Use the timer instead of leaving it on all night.
• Close the door of the room you're heating.
• Block the draught under the door and close curtains after dark.
• Turn the central heating down when a room heater is doing the work.

When a portable heater is the wrong answer

If a room is cold because of a failed window seal, missing insulation or a blocked vent, fix that first. No heater is cheaper than not losing the heat in the first place.
