The short answer
RapidHeat is a 1,500 W ceramic PTC plug-in heater designed to warm one room — up to about 12 m² (130 sq ft) — in three to five minutes, instead of heating a whole house you are not using. It holds any temperature between 15°C and 32°C, runs under 30 dB, shuts itself off on a 1–12 hour timer, and costs roughly 12¢ an hour to run in Ontario. It starts at $59 CAD with free shipping across Canada and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How the RapidHeat heater actually works
Inside the black honeycomb grill is a block of ceramic PTC plates. PTC stands for positive temperature coefficient: as the ceramic gets hotter its electrical resistance rises, so it draws less current and naturally limits its own temperature. That is the important difference between this and the cheap coil heaters sold every winter. A coil glows red at several hundred degrees and stays that hot until you unplug it. A ceramic block self-regulates, which is why the housing stays cool enough to touch and why there is no hot-metal smell after an hour.
A quiet fan pushes air across the ceramic and out into the room. Because it moves warmed air rather than waiting for it to rise on its own, the room feels different within three to five minutes — you are not standing in front of it waiting, the way you do with an oil-filled radiator that takes half an hour to come up to temperature.
The thermostat is the part that decides your hydro bill. Set it to 21°C and the heater runs at full power until the room reaches it, then cycles the element off and on to hold it there. Over an evening that typically works out around half of the 1,500 W nameplate figure — roughly 0.75 kWh per hour of use. Set it to maximum and leave it, and you will pay the full rate for no extra comfort.
Safety is handled by three separate mechanisms rather than one: an overheat cut-out that kills power if the air intake is blocked, a tip-over switch that does the same the instant the unit leaves vertical, and the self-limiting ceramic element itself. On top of that is the 1–12 hour timer, so a heater you fall asleep beside does not run until morning. Plug it directly into a wall outlet — never an extension cord or power bar, which is the single most common cause of space-heater incidents in Canada.
Ordered on the Monday, warming my basement office by Thursday. Exactly as described, and the remote means I never get up to adjust it.

What's in the box
- The RapidHeat heater — the square silver-white unit with the black honeycomb grill and red LED temperature display. It plugs straight into any standard Canadian 120 V outlet; there is nothing to assemble and no tools required.
- The handheld remote — temperature, fan speed and timer from the sofa or the bed, so you are not crossing a cold room to adjust it.
- Quick-start guide — one page, in English, with the placement and safety rules worth reading before the first run.

How many do you need?
The rule is simple: one unit per room you actually want warm. A heater cannot heat through a doorway, and carrying one between the bedroom and the home office means the second room is always cold when you get to it.
- One heater — a single problem room: a bedroom that sits over the garage, a nursery, a spare room used at weekends.
- Two heaters — the most common order in Canada. One for the bedroom overnight, one for the home office during the day, both on timers.
- Three or four — a multi-storey home where the furnace never reaches the far end, or a household splitting an order with family. The per-unit price drops to $43 on the 3-pack.

A good fit for
- A bedroom, nursery or spare room up to roughly 12 m² (130 sq ft)
- A home office or den where you sit for hours and the furnace underperforms
- A finished basement corner, den or rec-room nook
- Anyone who wants to keep the house thermostat lower and heat one room instead
- Renters and students who cannot install anything permanent
Not the right product for
- Open-plan living and dining areas — one plug-in 120 V heater cannot keep up
- Uninsulated garages, workshops and sheds — you need a hard-wired 240 V unit
- Whole-home heating, or replacing a furnace or heat pump
- Outdoor use, bathrooms with splash exposure, or anywhere it would get wet
- Anyone wanting to run it from an extension cord or power bar — that is unsafe

Figures assume 1,500 W at roughly 50% thermostat duty cycle (about 0.75 kWh per hour) and 4 hours of use a day for 30 days. Your own rate is on your hydro bill — divide the total charge by the kilowatt-hours used for the truest number.

I work from a basement office and it was always freezing by 3pm. RapidHeat warms it in about four minutes and I just leave it on the thermostat setting. My hydro bill barely moved.
Helen R.

I bought two, one for the bedroom and one for the spare room. You can barely hear them. The timer means it shuts off on its own overnight.
Claire T.
Calgary, AB
Compact, plugs straight into the wall and takes up no floor space. The remote is handy and the automatic shut-off puts my mind at ease with a cat in the house.
