No plug-in electric heater is more efficient than another — they all turn essentially 100% of the electricity they draw into heat. Savings come from heating less: a correctly sized heater with a thermostat and timer, used in one occupied room while the central thermostat comes down a degree or two. Work out your own cost
Take the heater's power draw in kilowatts, multiply by the hours you run it, and multiply by your provincial rate per kilowatt-hour. Because the thermostat cycles the element off, real-world consumption is typically well below the flat-out figure.

What an energy-efficient heater actually means
Any advertisement claiming a plug-in heater is 40% or 60% more efficient than another plug-in heater is wrong. Electric resistance heating is already essentially 100% efficient: every watt drawn becomes heat in the room. There is no room left to improve.
What can be improved is how much heating you buy. That means heating a smaller volume of air, for fewer hours, to a lower temperature, and letting a thermostat make those decisions instead of leaving a switch on.
Four habits that genuinely cut the bill
- Drop the central thermostat one or two degrees and warm only the room you occupy — this is where the savings come from
- Set the heater's thermostat to the lowest comfortable temperature; every extra degree costs money all evening
- Use the timer rather than switching it on and forgetting it
- Close the door and block the draught under it — heating a room with the door open is heating the hallway
What it costs across Canada
With the thermostat cycling, a 1,500 W unit averages roughly 0.75 kWh for each hour it is on. At four hours a day for a month that is about $7 in Quebec, $9 in Manitoba, $14 in Ontario and $17 in Nova Scotia at current provincial prices.
Set against that, raising a whole-house thermostat by two degrees typically costs several times more over the same month, because it heats every room in the building whether anyone is in it or not.
