Types of portable heater compared

Size the heater to the room, not the house

A plug-in heater on a standard 120 V Canadian circuit can only draw so much power. That makes it excellent for a bedroom, home office, nursery, bathroom or basement corner of up to roughly 12 m² (130 sq ft), and a poor choice for an open-plan living area, a garage or anything uninsulated. If you need to warm several rooms, two or three small units beat one oversized one — you can run only the rooms you occupy.

What actually matters when you compare models

• A real thermostat. Without one, a heater runs flat out until you switch it off. Thermostat cycling is where the savings come from.
• A timer. Essential for overnight use and the single best protection against forgetting it.
• Tip-over and overheat cut-outs. Non-negotiable in a home with kids or pets.
• Noise level. Anything above 40 dB is intrusive in a bedroom or on a video call.
• A remote. Small thing, big difference when the heater is behind furniture.

Safe use in a Canadian home

• Plug directly into a wall outlet — never into an extension cord or power bar.
• Keep one metre of clear space in front of the unit.
• Never cover it or use it to dry clothing.
• Use the timer rather than running it unattended for long periods.
