How to clean a portable space heater

Dust is the enemy of every fan-driven heater. It muffles airflow, makes the fan work harder, and produces that burnt-dust smell on the first cold day of the year. Ten minutes of cleaning fixes all of it.

The short answer

Unplug the heater and let it cool, vacuum the intake and grille with a brush attachment, wipe the housing with a barely damp cloth, dry it fully and plug it back into a wall outlet. Do this every two to four weeks during the heating season and always before storing it for summer. Never spray liquid into the grille and never open the casing.

Cleaning the grille of a portable ceramic heater

Before you start

  • Switch the heater off and unplug it from the wall
  • Let it cool completely — at least 30 minutes
  • Work over a hard floor or outdoors, not over a rug
  • Never let water get inside the housing

Step by step

  • Vacuum the intake and output grilles with a soft brush attachment
  • Use a can of compressed air, at a distance, to lift dust from inside the grille
  • Wipe the outer housing with a barely damp cloth, then dry it
  • Remove and rinse or vacuum the filter if the model has one, and let it dry fully before refitting
  • Check the cord and plug for damage or discolouration while you are there

How often

  • Every two to four weeks during the heating season if it runs daily
  • Once at the start of winter, before the first real use
  • Once at the end of winter, before it goes into storage

What to avoid

  • Water, spray cleaners or solvents anywhere near the vents
  • Poking metal objects through the grille
  • Running it with a wet filter
  • Storing it uncovered in a dusty basement or garage

That burnt-dust smell

A faint smell on the first use of the season is dust burning off the element and is normal. If you get it every time you run the heater, or it smells of hot plastic or electrics, stop using the unit and contact support.

How often to clean it

A quick vacuum of the grille every two to four weeks during the heating season is enough for most homes. Households with pets, carpet or ongoing renovation dust should do it fortnightly.

Give it a full clean at the start and end of the season, and always before storing it away for the summer — dust left on the element is what produces a burning smell the first time you switch it on in November.

Signs it needs cleaning now

  • A faint burning or dusty smell in the first minutes of use
  • Less airflow from the grille than you remember
  • The unit cutting out on its overheat protection
  • Visible grey fluff in the intake vents
  • The fan sounding louder or rougher than usual

What not to do

  • Do not spray any liquid into the grille or intake
  • Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners on the housing
  • Do not open the casing — there are no user-serviceable parts and it voids the warranty
  • Do not clean it while it is plugged in or still warm
  • Do not put anything into the grille slots to poke dust free
